California
has been suffering from a terrible drought the past couple years and it has
freaked out a lot of people. The LA Times provides some answers why the drought
is so bad. People have learned to conserve their water usage as much as they
can and it has helped greatly in the past few years. A major impact was that
the land was dry. There was a huge dry spell that went over California and
because of the lack of snow and rain it hit California hard. Many reservoir
levels decreased greatly and things that held water went dry. A reason that
water shriveled up because we have been facing some of the hottest times
lately. The winters are still cold but they are warmer than usual. The heat
makes the drought conditions worse by increasing evaporation and drying soil
out. These conditions California has been suffering lately has caused for many
acres to be burned in wildfires across the Northern areas of California. There
were record-breaking amount of acres that were burned in a calendar year with a
total of 813,163 acres. Since there has not been much precipitation lately the
vegetation has dried out which caused fuel moistures to drop to critically low
numbers.
